These Languages Are Fading—So Bots Are Trained to Save Them

Language revitalization is vital to preserving Indigenous cultures and identities—but resources are dwindling. Fewer than 1 in 10 Indigenous children in the United States spoke a traditional language at home in 2010, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That’s less than half as many as among Native Americans 65 or older—an alarming figure when many of these elders can be the sole speakers of a particular language. The lack of tribal school funding and other systemic obstacles like geographic iso

Comedians Patti Harrison, Sarah Sherman entertain as spring speakers for joint A&O, Sherman Ave. event

Comedians Sarah Sherman (Communication ’15) and Patti Harrison have faced all sorts of crowds before, but they succeeded at a particularly difficult task Wednesday night: eliciting laughs from an audience of Northwestern students with final exams on the horizon.

A&O Productions and Sherman Ave. hosted the pair of entertainers in a sold-out show in McCormick Auditorium.

“Having Sherman Ave. as a collaborator for the event was really important to us,” A&O Director of Speakers and Communication j

Fighting to create the fight

On a Tuesday evening in the Norris Game Room, McCormick junior Alejandro “Nazo” Escoto squares off against Tomi “Shigen” Inouye in a Dragon Ball FighterZ match. Acting as both a mentor and opponent, Escoto is teaching the game to Inouye through the on-screen interactions. At one point, when Inouye is caught being overzealous and gets punished with a devastating 52-hit combo, there’s nothing he can do but watch as Broly, his last remaining character, loses all of his health. “The idea that hittin

Even with state-imposed capacity restrictions, it was a less crowded summer night than usual when Sam Blumin got confrontational with a concert-goer. A disruptive older gentleman, who had already been issued a warning at a previous show, repeatedly rose from his table, maskless, grumbling obscenities and rudely flouting the posted rules. Since the audience was too small to justify hiring security, Blumin faced the inebriated rule-breaker himself, vehemently explaining the danger he posed to the other guests. Eventually, Blumin announced that he was no longer welcome on the premises.

Is esports a beneficiary of a global pandemic?

When Cole Schwartz, founder of the Esports @UCLA club, graduated college a year ago, he didn’t have to look far to complete his post-undergraduate job search. Schwartz, hired as UCLA Recreation’s esports engagement coordinator last October, called the position a “dream come true,” and he was eager for a chance to prove that esports could be as engaging as any traditional sport. He never imagined that such an opportunity would arise so soon.

Is Northwestern meeting students’ financial needs?

While Northwestern University will proudly advertise that it meets “100 percent of demonstrated financial need” within every brochure, website, and tour guide speech that can include the phrase, that may not provide a reassuring answer for all prospective and current Wildcats.

It is a key concern for the approximately 50 percent of students that receive need-based aid at Northwestern.

“Whenever [students] are looking for support or managing their financial aid package, I find that a lot of the
